The Roselli autumn guide

The Roselli autumn guide

Choose the right tools. Make more of autumn.

Find the right knife for bushcraft, mushroom picking or hunting, choose an axe for camp or cabin, and learn how to keep your tools ready through wet autumn weather. At Roselli, we have been making knives and axes by hand in Finland since 1976. Our tools combine practical design with distinctive materials, and every knife and axe comes with a lifetime warranty and free sharpening for life.

Here is what to choose, why it suits the task and how to care for it. From bushcraft and mushroom picking to preparing firewood, here is how to make your autumn kit work for you.

Choose a knife for the way you spend time outdoors

Preparing kindling, making feather sticks, cutting food or carving beside the fire: a versatile outdoor knife earns its place through the jobs it helps you do.

Look for a comfortable grip, a blade you can control and a design suited to your usual tasks.

Roselli Premium Carbon Steel is a practical choice for varied outdoor work, combining durability with straightforward sharpening.

Our own in-house UHC (Ultra High Carbon) steel, at approximately 64 HRC, offers exceptional edge retention for precise cutting. Use controlled cuts and avoid twisting or levering the blade to make the most of its lasting sharpness.

Mushroom picking, from forest to table

A basket, suitable clothing and a mushroom knife are a simple starting point for an autumn walk with dinner in mind.

Only collect mushrooms you can identify with certainty. Clean away loose soil, needles and debris before placing them in your basket, and trim them as needed.

A little preparation in the forest means less work when you get home.

Get your firewood ready for colder days

Whether you are preparing for a cabin weekend, a sauna or an evening around the fire, having dry firewood ready makes the colder months easier.

Split your wood into useful sizes and store it off the ground in a dry, well-ventilated place.

When splitting, use a stable chopping block and work with controlled movements. Choose an axe that suits the size of the wood and the work you plan to do.

Short or long handle, which axe suits you?

Choose a short-handled axe when portability matters and you mainly need it for smaller pieces of wood and lighter camp tasks.

Choose a long-handled axe when you want more leverage for regular firewood splitting.

Roselli axes are made with Premium Carbon Steel for practical work around the forest, camp and cabin.

Turn your autumn outing into a meal outdoors

A hot meal tastes especially good after a few hours in the autumn air.

Keep it simple: potatoes, correctly identified edible mushrooms, onion and sausage cooked in a pan can make a memorable lunch.

A dependable knife helps with preparing ingredients, slicing bread and everyday cutting tasks around camp.

Pack a few ingredients, bring a pan and leave time to enjoy the meal.

Choose a hunting knife you can control

Blade length is only part of choosing a hunting knife. A comfortable grip and good control matter just as much.

A shorter blade can be useful for detailed cutting and careful work when processing game. A longer blade offers more reach for larger cutting tasks.

Choose according to the game, the work you expect to do and the knife that feels most natural in your hand.

Hunting knife, a versatile classic

The classic Roselli Hunting knife offers more blade length while retaining the simple, functional design of a traditional Finnish knife.

Choose it for general hunting use and a wider range of outdoor cutting tasks.

Best for: Hunting, detailed cutting and controlled work.

Keep your knife ready through wet weather

Rain, damp gloves and wet equipment make a simple care routine especially useful in autumn.

After use:

  1. Clean the blade.
  2. Dry it thoroughly.
  3. Apply a thin layer of suitable oil when needed.
  4. Store the knife in a dry place.

If your sheath is wet, let it dry separately before putting the knife away. Never put your Roselli knife in the dishwasher.

Patina or rust?
Carbon steel can develop a grey or dark surface with use. This is called patina and is a normal part of the blade’s appearance over time.

Orange or reddish rust is different and should be removed. Regular cleaning, drying and oiling help keep your blade in good condition.

Start the season with a sharp edge

Check your knife before your next outing. Regular, light sharpening helps keep the edge ready for controlled cutting and food preparation.

Premium Carbon Steel is straightforward to sharpen. UHC offers longer edge retention and benefits from sharpening equipment suited to its higher hardness.
